Offshore company Amec has given 150 design staff a boost with the announcement that they will have jobs at a newly opened £1 million engineering complex on Teeside.
The offshore company formation which is situated at Wynyard, near Billingham will require 150 additional staff to be recruited over the next year, the company said.
It explained that employees had to be relocated from the companys existing base at Wallasend, Newcastle, because of the decline of shipbuilding on the Tyne.
Amec chief operating officer, Neil Bruce, said that the company was hoping the new north-east base would allow them to meet growing demand for natural gas and oil projects in the North Sea, west Africa, Russia, China and the Middle East.
"We are proud to continue our investment in the north-east to help with job creation. Wynyard Park will become a key engineering hub for Amec, generating prosperity for both the US and the north-east," he said.
"Our team at Wynyard will work closely with other global engineering centres to provide our clients with a consistently world-class service wherever it is needed."
With these new jobs, Amecs workforce in the Tees Valley is now more than 1,000 strong. The company employs 700 people at the headquarters of its engineering division in Darlington.
