It is "very important" for small firms to advertise online if they are to compete with bigger companies, an expert has emphasised.
Adam Wayland, editor of Smallbusiness.co.uk, explained that web services and online advertising ensure wide exposure, particularly as most consumers now use the internet to search for services.
He continued: "Most businesses now will have a website, even if its just
a contact detail on a page.
"Thats the way that people look for local businesses now."
Mr Wayland acknowledged that internet advertising and web design can be expensive, but explained there are cheaper techniques a business start-up can employ to move itself up the Google rankings.
He said: "There are techniques that
small businesses and businesses can employ that arent going to cost so much [such as] using key words in articles."
According to statistics from the Internet Advertising Bureau, there are now 30.9 million people online, some 66 per cent of the total British adult population.
The UK online advertising industry is valued at £2,015.8 billion for the full year of 2006, taking an 11.4 per cent share of the UK advertising industry.
