Small to medium size businesses and people looking to mount a business start-up plan need to invest more in internet security, it has been claimed.
The British Computer Society (BCS) said that failure to implement a comprehensive online security solution can lead to internet threats that are very expensive to fix.
It is important for small businesses as well as those operating business start up plans to implement this, it is thought.
Andrea Simmons at the BCS said: "We really need to raise
the importance of information as an organisational aspect, however small the organisation.
"Its all about the risk assessment bit and thats the difficulty.
"Its the whole spend to save mentality [that is] required. You do need to put some investment in," she added.
Viruses and malicious software account for around 36 per cent of online SME security problems according to a recent survey from the Department for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform survey.
