There has been a "huge take up" in Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) technology among SMEs in the UK, according to experts.
Tan Aksov, CEO of IP telephony company Telappliant, said recently that "cost savings, flexibility, mobility and features are the main reasons now why SMEs are now going for this technology".
VoIP refers to a system that allows the user to make telephone calls over broadband internet. It is a rapidly growing service and is marketed as a way of making high-quality, low-cost calls.
Mr Aksov explained that using VoIP, a business start-up can make savings in line rental charges as well as on ongoing calls.
Ease of mobility and the greater range of services on offer are other reasons why many small firms are using VoIP.
Mr Aksov continued: "With VoIP you can have a virtual office anywhere in the world, as long as you have an internet connection, you can have
a virtual presence wherever you are.
"With our hosted telephony platform you can have audio conferencing, virtual receptions, call recording, all managed through a simple web interface."
According to the latest update from the survey of Internet Service Providers (ISP), broadband connections formed 69.2 per cent of all UK internet connections in March 2006, up from 65.1 per cent in December 2005.
Web services involving dial-up connections continue to decline and now account for 30.8 per cent of all internet connections.
