Factors such as the floods this summer and the changes to capital gains tax have made 2007 a bit of a nightmare for company directors of small businesses, the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) said last week.
Whatever happens with the weather and in the financial markets next year will all have an effect on small businesses and it is not necessarily something that the government will be able to do anything about.
The FSB added however that what the government can do is to stop "going after small businesses as an easy target".
According to the FSB, small businesses need the tax system to be made simpler but this should not be done in a way that increases how much they pay.
In his pre-budget report earlier this year, the Chancellor of the Exchequer Alistair Darling decided to end the taper relief method of collecting capital gains tax (CGT) from businesses.
Simon Briault, spokesperson for the FSB, said: "Although the Chancellor said the CGT changes were about simplification, the fact is he is set to get the best part of an extra billion pounds. So its pretty transparent. Its like saying well cut your head off to cure your headache".
