Slow internet speeds in Britain will "definitely" have an adverse effect on small businesses, according to online self-help service Broadband Choices.
Countries such as France and Japan already enjoy significantly faster broadband connections but upgrading networks so Britain is up to par is a huge project, the company said.
The impact of slow internet connections will especially be felt by company directors of small business especially as the amount of data that companies look to transfer in the future increases in size.
There has been discussion about whether Britain should take the expensive steps necessary towards installing a cable system capable of delivering the next generation broadband speeds other countries enjoy.
Opinion is divided but both BT and Ofcom believe the push is premature.
It is believed that a faster connection network would benefit businesses and individuals but research by Broadband Choices suggests people may be unwilling to pay more for the service - only 40 per cent said they would be willing to pay extra.
Michael Phillips, product director at Broadband Choices, said: "If Britain wants economic development in all parts of the UK, not just [in] London, we need to spend the money on building a next generation network, with carbon fibre technology."
