Small businesses operating online should seek advice before setting up online payment systems.
According to Get Safe Online, set up by the government and the Serious Organised Crime Agency (Soca), small firms could open themselves up to new rules and regulations by taking money over the internet.
Managing director of the initiative Tony Neate explained that smaller companies could also be subject to legislation related to taking personal details from consumers.
"If you are not an expert in relation to computers and computer security and you have your own e-commerce site or server, then you need to get advice," he said, reminding companies that particular care needs to be paid to credit card transactions.
"If you are taking peoples credit card details and transacting online, make sure you have listened to the correct advice."
Get Safe Online works with a series of leading businesses in the UK to help individual traders and small companies protect themselves and their customers from internet security risks.
