Hundreds of company directors of small businesses could lose out this Christmas after one of the UKs biggest web hosting companies was targeted by computer hackers.
The hackers broke into a Fasthosts customer database in October, stealing the personal data of hundreds of clients including bank details, passwords and addresses.
Following the attack on its server, Fasthosts asked customers to change their passwords for the web space it looks after for them.
The company subsequently noticed that some customers had not reset their passwords and were experiencing continued breaches and so automatically reset their passwords.
Although the new passwords are being delivered through Royal Mail, web-based activities for the businesses affected are effectively halted until the letters arrive.
This means that in the mean time, many small firms cannot access their websites to administer their web services.
A spokesperson for Fasthosts said: "We apologise to those customers affected for any inconvenience caused during the issuing of new passwords.
"Fasthosts is fully confident that in completing all remaining password changes as described, this will prevent any future disruption or concern."
