The governments Business Link service does improve the performance of small firms, a new report has confirmed.
The study, which examined more than 3,000 small businesses, was conducted by economists from Warwick, Kingston and Aston University business schools.
It revealed that small companies using Business Link added around £750 million to the UK economy every year.
Researchers also found that better business performance also meant that each £1 spent in this form of government funding resulted in £2.26 of added value to the economy
Stephen Timms, the new minister for small business, said: "Small and medium enterprises account for a large portion of the UK economy.
"This report shows the Business Link service is being used by many of them for help and support, boosting the economy as a whole.
We will continue to grow the Business Link service, making it the definitive place for small businesses to find support."
Business Link is a national business advice service run by the government, which aims to provide help and advice on a wide range of issues such as company formation and tax planning.
It is comprised of independent Business Link organisations for each geographical area of the country. There are currently 45 county-based Business Link operators.
