The finalists for this years Enterprising Britain competition have been announced.
The event, launched in January, has been organised by the Department for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform.
It aims to promote entrepreneurship in the UK and to highlight key areas of business start-up excellence.
These include the creation of jobs following company formation, the improvement of an areas local business and residential climate - and the forging of community links.
Shortlisted initiatives will compete against others at the UK final in September.
The winner will then go on to represent the UK at the European Enterprise Awards later in the year.
Twelve projects have been nominated by each of the UKs nine Regional Development Agencies and its three Devolved Administrations.
Lynne Franks, national competition judge, said: "I am inspired by the entrepreneurial spirit shown by the projects and their communities.
"The Enterprising Britain competition is a great chance to recognise people at a local level who pool resources and create sustainable positive change."
The competition also allows initiatives in less economically buoyant areas of the UK to shine.
Mark Hughes, executive director of enterprise innovation and skills at the Northwest Regional Development Agency, highlighted the importance of the event for his region.
He continued: "According to the London Business Schools 2006 Global Entrepreneurship Monitor there has been an increase in entrepreneurship in the Northwest between 2005 and 2006 and its something we are committed to increasing further to help reduce the north-south economic gap."
