Less than half of small business bosses have a degree, new research has revealed.
The study, by Barclays Local Business, also found that only around one in ten entrepreneurs believe a good education is essential to business success.
John Davis, marketing director for Barclays Local Business, said: "This survey really does suggest that entrepreneurialism is a quality born to people, rather than taught."
Jordan McGreevy left school at 16 to set up his own computer game business start-up.
He told Barclays: "Having worked on my game during the last few years at school, I felt confident that I knew enough about the field to not go to university.
"It is hard work, but with any luck I wont have to work as hard in the future.
"University would have been a good experience, but I prefer the challenge of learning on my own."
In the UK, small businessmen and women in London were the most likely to have a degree - 57 per cent of respondents in the city were graduates.
In the north-east of England, however, just 36 per cent were university leavers.
Several UK high street banks, including Barclays, offer specific services to help entrepreneurs proceed with company formation and develop their small businesses.
