Entrepreneurship does involve an element of risk, but businesspeople should focus on the possible gains to be made, an expert has emphasised.
The Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM) 2005 found that despite a generally supportive business environment, the UK continues to lag some way behind countries such as the USA and Canada in terms of entrepreneurial activity.
Tanya Hine, president of the British Association of Women Entrepreneurs, recently said that a positive attitude is hugely important to a successful business enterprise.
She explained: "The word entrepreneur means nothing more than someone who is willing to take risks and not everybody wants to do so.
"You must be able to know that it is risky
you could lose all, but you could gain all.
"But always be positive and the gain all should always come before the lose all."
Ms Hine acknowledged that large amounts of red tape - such as that associated with company legislation and tax planning - does make running a small business in the UK "that much more difficult".
However, she emphasised that there is a wide range of funding possibilities available - and continued: "If youre a true entrepreneur, there are always options available."
GEM data suggests that the UK is still the most entrepreneurial of the large economies in the EU, ahead of Germany, Italy and France.
