The European Commission must do more to ease the regulatory burden on Europes smallest businesses, experts have insisted.
The Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW) emphasised this need while praising the Commissions recognition of the need to reduce red tape.
As reported by startups.co.uk, Clive Lewis, head of small business issues at the ICAEW, said: "Im pleased that the European Commission has recognised the need to simplify the business environment and broadly support the main proposals."
However, he continued: "Requirements on businesses vary widely across the European Union.
"It is therefore right that the Commission gives member states flexibility to introduce measures to reduce the regulatory burden, especially on the smallest businesses."
Mr Lewis concluded that "[by] helping them focus their time on their businesses rather than regulation, the Commission can have a real impact".
The Commission has identified a number of key priorities for regulatory reform, including European company legislation and auditing procedures.
The Forum of Private Business (FPB) recently called on the new chancellor of the exchequer, Alistair Darling, to implement tax mitigation measures and ease the complexities of red tape.
