Graduate employees can benefit small businesses because they are willing to learn and bring a fresh perspective to situations, an expert has said.
Dan Hawes, co-founder of the Graduate Recruitment Bureau, explained: "They tend to challenge how things have been done before - and if the company can accommodate that then thats great.
"Theyve come from a learning environment, so they continually learn in the workplace."
He also highlighted some practical advantages of hiring graduates, saying: "Theyre very flexible, they havent got many ties... [and] theyre relatively cheaper hires, obviously, over people whove got experience."
Mr Hawes acknowledged that the typical business start-up is unlikely to be able to compete with larger companies in terms of graduate salaries.
However, he emphasised that opportunities for graduates to gain experience and the potential for responsibility and promotion can "offset" this financial disadvantage.
Previous research has shown that online advertising is one way small businesses can attract graduates to work for them.
As Mr Hawes commented, this use of web services is often the best way for small firms to "increase their exposure to a very large audience".
