Almost three-quarters of UK small businesses believe that the internet will play a key role in helping them to achieve their business aims, new research has found.
The survey by BT Business, which focused on firms with up to 50 employees, found that 74 per cent of respondents thought the internet would take a primary role in the achievement of their goals within the next three years.
Web services were also revealed as being crucial in aiding company formation and developing business contacts, partnerships and networks.
Over one-third of respondents thought being part of an online business network would be beneficial.
Ivan Croxford, head of market development at BT Business, said: "Relationships and networking are all essential elements of running a successful company and small businesses, in particular, rely on recommendations and personal introductions.
"There is a perception that technology has changed this and made the world less personal, but thats not the case.
"We may not go to as many face-to-face meetings, but were communicating and sharing thoughts a lot more, using e-mail, blogs and social networking sites in both our business and personal lives."
Some 63 per cent of those questioned felt that internet developments had significantly helped them compete with bigger firms and those in other business sectors.
However, the study also revealed that around one in five respondents still had no presence on the internet at all.
