Stephen Timms MP has taken on the role of small business minister in Gordon Browns new government.
Mr Timms will operate in his role as part of the Department for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform.
Small business leaders hope the appointment will lead to a greater focus on issues concerning them.
The Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) welcomed the appointment.
John Walker, national policy chairman of the FSB, said: "If the new department does what it says on the tin in terms of regulation, then small businesses and the UK economy as a whole will benefit greatly.
"We hope that Stephen Timms experience at the Treasury will have given him some understanding of the dismay felt by small companies following the unexpected and unwelcome tax rise imposed upon them in the last Budget.
"We look forward to working with him to improve the regulatory environment for small businesses and highlight their concerns across government."
The government is currently under significant pressures from businesses to simplify the tax system and tax planning measures - and to reduce complex red tape such as that associated with company legislation.
A recent study by the Forum of Private Business (FPB) revealed that small businesses felt these were the measures that would most help their growth and future success.
