Family members play a crucial role in the success of UK small businesses, according to new research.
The study, by business advice firm Tenon Forum, revealed that nearly 60 per cent of UK entrepreneurs involve family members in their business ventures.
In the majority of cases, family support is given with some expectation of financial reward. Over one-third of family members who do get involved are officially employed, while 13 per cent invest in the business.
However, the survey also showed that many generous relatives contribute their help for free. Around one in 12 entrepreneurs have a family member working for them for no pay at all.
Michaela Johns, director of business services at Tenon, said: "Its great to see that 21st century family businesses are flourishing in the UK despite the many unique challenges they face each day.
"But whether finding new ways to compete with larger competitors or ensuring the business complies with a vast array of government legislation, family businesses should seek solid, objective advice from outside the family circle to best ensure success and growth."
Married couples make up the leadership of around one-third of small businesses.
Some six per cent of such firms turn to family for professional advice such as tax planning, consultation over company legislation or consultancy.
