Sir Digby Jones, the new Trade and Industry Minister, has said he "wont be taking any prisoners" in his new role.
Sir Digby recently told the Telegraph he was delighted to get the chance to put business, wealth creation and job creation "right in the middle of the decision-making and policy formulation of the government".
Many small businesses are likely to welcome Sir Digbys appointment.
The minister has long emphasised the importance he places on working for a simpler and lower corporate tax regime - and cutting excess red tape wherever he can.
These issues are regularly flagged up as two of the most significant problems UK SMEs face.
Sir Digby was formerly director general of the Confederation of British Industry - and is not even a member of the Labour Party.
He explained how his status as a relative outsider would help him pursue policies, such as revised tax planning and company legislation reform, more effectively.
He said: "I wont be taking any prisoners in this new role. You can do that if youre coming in from outside like me.
"We have access to Number 10 and Number 11 and I can make these points very forcefully."
