Small businesses in the UK are losing around £2.5 million during each postal strike, figures suggest.
A 2006 report from the British Chambers of Commerce (BCC) found that SMEs send over eight million items a day through franking machines.
The BCC calculated that the value of this post, delayed each day that a strike occurs, could be as much as £2,630,136.
At present, some postal workers are taking part in a two-week run of strike action, with each division of Royal Mail striking on a different day.
As reported by Startups.co.uk, Natalie Evans, head of policy at the BCC, said: "Most smaller sized businesses have no option but to use Royal Mail and collectively spend millions of pounds each day on their post.
"This series of strikes is doing nothing but causing delay and frustration for those who rely on the postal service and the sooner it is resolved the better."
The strike action comes in the wake of severe flooding in several parts of the UK, where the typical business start-up is already suffering with damaged equipment and web services and disrupted deliveries.
Matt Hardman, campaigns manager at the Forum of Private Business, emphasised: "It is unfortunate that the Communication Workers Union has taken the action.
"They should not hold business to ransom for their inability to resolve this dispute."
