The amount of red tape small UK firms have to deal with can be "an absolute nightmare", according to one financial advisor.
Harry Katz, principle of Norwest Consultants, explained that it is relatively easy to initiate a business start-up in the UK.
However, he emphasised that red tape and company legislation involving staff and other management issues can "drag you down" once the firm is up and running.
Mr Katz said: "One of the main problems for any business is staff.
"If you employ female staff and they stay for any length of time and then become pregnant, youve got to pay them and keep their job open.
"How can a small business afford that? Its impossible."
While acknowledging the need for "some sort of social conscience", Mr Katz emphasised that for small businesses in particular, staff are very expensive.
He continued: "The regulations and all the red tape make it an absolute nightmare and if youre not careful you could be lumbered with staff that are an absolute drain on your business and could drag you down."
The Forum of Private Business (FPB) recently called on the government to cut the red tape affecting UK firms.
Martin Smith, policy director of the FPB, said: "The governments promised actions are limited entirely to better regulation and there is no recognition at all that a reduction in the stock of regulations is necessary."
