Many small firms in the UK are losing thousands of pounds due to poor energy efficiency, new research has revealed.
The study, carried out on behalf of British Gas Business, investigated companies energy practices.
It found that while 59 per cent of respondents recognised the need to improve their firms energy efficiency, one third also admitted they were unsure how to make the changes.
As reported by Smallbusiness.co.uk, Adrian Harvey, commercial director of British Gas Business, said: "In 2005 alone, £12 billion worth of energy was wasted in the UK. For small businesses in particular, this is frightening news as the amount of energy we use continues to rise."
He continued: "With this in mind there is a clear business case to be made: cut down your energy consumption, do your bit for the environment and reduce your bills."
The survey also revealed that on average, small firms spend almost ten per cent of their total budget on energy costs.
Charlotte High, programme manager for Smartworks, the SME support project of environmental charity Global Action Plan, recently emphasised that energy efficiency can help a business start-up save money.
She explained that "going green" could actually be "highly cost effective" for SMEs - and could be achieved through low-cost and even no-cost measures.
