Online business entrepreneurs should make use of traditional marketing techniques as well, according to one business expert.
Paul McEldon of the National Federation of Enterprise Agencies (NFEA) recently said that company formation of an online business may be more cost effective than a "traditional" business start-up.
However, he emphasised that costs may still be significant, commenting: "The start-up costs for an online business can be quite substantial in terms of design, technical set up and security.
"Websites can cost anything from £200 to more than £50,000.
He also explained that such a business may not make money immediately.
He explained: "It is important for start-up businesses to be aware that once a site has gone live, it doesnt automatically generate income - planning for traditional marketing methods alongside web activity should always be considered."
Many entrepreneurs have become more familiar with trading on the web in recent years and customers have developed greater trust in the security of online sales.
As reported recently by smallbusiness.co.uk, web-based fashion retailer ASOS increased its sales by 85 per cent over the past three months.
