Two-thirds of micro businesses - those with one to ten employees - still operate without an internet connection, website or email address, a new study has found.
The research, by internet provider UK Online, also revealed that many micro businesses that are connected to the net do not fully utilise web services and web design opportunities, or have adequate internet protection.
The study indicated that 51 per cent of such firms do not have a company website, 17 per cent are still using dial up connections and 18 per cent do not have anti-virus software.
Chris Stening, managing director of UK Online, said: "The study shows that small business owners are just not working online effectively."
He also commented on the fact that nearly 40 per cent of the respondents admitted to using a consumer internet package rather than one designed for businesses.
Mr Stening insisted: "There is clearly a need for a dedicated small business broadband provider which can provide the right tools for them to do the job but also back this up with a technical support which works the same hours as they do."
The studys findings echo recent research by management solution provider Mediasurface, which showed that over 40 per cent of all UK SMEs were unaware of Web 2.0 - and around ten per cent still did not have websites at all.
