Most SMEs enjoy good relationships with their accountants, according to new research.
The study, by Venture finance, showed that 84 per cent of SMEs had a close relationship with their accountant.
Some 83 per cent of respondents also felt valued by them - and 78 per cent of SMEs felt their accountant offered the best, unbiased financial advice available.
Steve Websdale, director of Venture Finance, said: "Accountants have a pivotal role to play in advising SMEs about the plethora of funding options available, especially those that exist outside of high street banks.
"The high level of service accountants provide, as highlighted by this research, coupled with their independence and industry expertise makes them best placed to offer guidance on suitable financial products."
In dealing with budgeting, aspects of offshore banking and cash flow forecasting, accountants are crucial to the smooth running of many small businesses.
A proficient accountant can also manage one of the most time-consuming of administrative tasks - tax planning and mitigation.
Small businesses owners very often do not have the time to deal with tax issues such as classifying their expenses for tax purposes.
Accountants can show small business owners ways of saving tax legally through avoiding payment of unnecessary tax.
