The typical business start-up is becoming more knowledgeable about environmental issues, new research suggests.
A recent report has been compiled by NetRegs, the government website offering environmental regulation guidance.
Almost 80 per cent of small firms who responded to the survey said they knew more about environmental issues now than they did five years ago.
Nearly three-quarters of respondents also believed that good green practice was important.
Richard Martin, programme manager at NetRegs, said: "This research shows that small businesses are taking their environmental responsibilities seriously and whats more they expect the businesses they work with to do the same."
However, its not all good news. Some 60 per cent of small firms remain unaware of environmental regulations that apply specifically to their industry.
Although 86 per cent said it was important that their contractors disposed of waste properly, some 66 per cent admitted they did not always check to see if this was done.
The web services offered by NetRegs include environmental guidance for a very wide range of business sectors including offices, construction, agriculture, electronics and others.
The site also gives small businesses advice on how they can save money by showing them how to use their resources more efficiently.
