Small businesses looking to recruit new employees using web services face a challenging range of internet options, according to new research.
A recent study conducted by Whatjobsite.com, a site intended to help SMEs with online recruitment advertising, found that there are now over 1,200 internet job sites in the UK and Ireland.
This number did not include employer or recruitment consultancy websites - and evidence suggests that an average of one new job site is still being launched every week.
The huge range available is thought to present one of the biggest challenges to SMEs looking to effectively recruit the most appropriate staff.
As reported by Onrec.com, Karl Schweppe, managing director of Whatjobsite.com, emphasised: "Clearly, SME recruiters face significant challenges when going online.
"Recruitment consultants, advertising agencies and large corporates have all invested time and money in researching job sites to find out which ones work.
"The SME recruiter, however, simply does not have the resources to do such research."
Mr Schweppe went on to explain being number one in the search results page often has less to do with the ability to fill jobs and more to do with investment in search engine optimisation.
The typical business start-up often cannot afford to lose the valuable time spent posting advertising on a large number of job sites.
In addition, placing vacancy notices on several job sites can mean SMEs rapidly incur substantial advertising costs with no guarantee of finding a suitable applicant.
