The productivity of many UK business start-ups and other SMEs could be being badly affected because of a lack of IT support, new research has suggested.
As reported by Bcentral.co.uk, the study, conducted by BT Ireland, showed that small businesses operating without sufficient IT support staff are losing up to 15 per cent of the working week as managers and other staff step in to try and deal with IT problems.
The research indicated that SME employees are often giving up around 25 per cent of their working week to deal with IT problems.
The survey showed that in smaller companies, 38 per cent of IT tasks were tackled by members of management teams.
Some 34 per cent of administrative employees in such companies were responsible were dealing with IT difficulties.
The main reason for the lack of IT staff in many UK SMEs appears to be concerns about expense. Of the firms questioned in the survey, some 44 per cent suggested employing dedicated IT staff would be too costly.
This is despite the fact that around two-thirds admitted IT was essential to business efficiency.
Recent research has suggested that many small businesses do not fully itilise the potential of IT and web services on the internet.
A recent survey by mediasurface suggested that over 40 per cent of SMEs are unaware of Web 2.0 - and around ten per cent still do not have websites at all.
