Employee stress and illness can have a direct impact on small businesses and managers must act to tackle the problem, a charity has emphasised.
The International Stress Management Association [UK] said that the consequences of stress not only affect a business start-up or other small firm financially but can also impact upon the general wellbeing of its workers.
Caroline Raymond, vice-chairperson of the charity, said: "If youre a small business, if people go off sick its obviously likely to have a very direct impact on the business.
"If you are self employed the effect on your financial situation could be very serious."
Ms Raymond explained that certain large organisations do recognise the difficulties faced by small businesses in this respect and provide advice lines and web services to help.
She said: "Organisations like the Health and Safety Executive and Business Link have been working to help small businesses. They recognise some of the problems they have to face.
"On the Health and Safety Executive web site there is an advice line [and] they do some work too on encouraging senior managers of small companies to take action."
Stress can lead to periods of prolonged staff absence and in extreme cases, employee resignations.
Recent research indicated that almost 80 per cent of UK SMEs experience significant problems in retaining staff.
