A new report claims that web design and slow loading times can badly harm the business image of a company.
The study by 1&1 Internet found that nine out of ten consumers would switch to a competitor if a firms website failed to load.
A sizeable 80 per cent of those canvassed said that a slow website was a major irritation when using the internet and that two-thirds would look elsewhere should they be confronted with an error message on a website.
The research suggests that many businesses must pay closer attention to their web services if they are not to lose custom.
"With so many options available on the internet, consumers want information quickly," commented Andreas Gauger, the chief executive officer of 1&1 Internet.
"If a web site fails to perform to their expectations it is quickly dismissed for another."
Just over half of people said they would wait only 30 seconds for a website to load before moving on elsewhere.
