The development of the internet has meant businesses no longer have to be long-established and highly-resourced in their home countries before they embark on overseas development.
In recent years internationalisation has occurred rapidly, with many SMEs going straight from company formation to operating as successful international ventures.
Indeed, many have no choice as their products are designed for the global, rather than domestic market.
Now a doctoral thesis has been produced which outlines a blueprint for successful high-speed internationalisation.
It provides useful insights for business start-ups and other SMEs doing business on the internet.
Siv Marina Flo Karlsen of the BI Norwegian School of Management undertook the research, which focused on key personnel from twelve companies which achieved early success in the international and global arenas, measured as a proportion of exports and the number of continents where they operated.
Ms Karlsen then identified the common characteristics of companies which achieved global success at an early stage. Summing up her conclusions, she told Gizmag.com: "The key to success is having a strategic network and unique products."
