A new poll by mobile phone company T-Mobile has found that over a third of small businesses are more demanding than ever.
Some 33 per cent of respondents told researchers that colleagues and suppliers, as well as customers, now expect faster response times.
Derek Williamson, head of business marketing at T-Mobile UK, said: "The rise of the internet has given birth to a want it now culture.
"Customers expect an immediate response to every enquiry. This is forcing [small businesses] to operate in a different way and use all the tools at their disposal to be more productive and efficient."
As the culture surrounding company formation and development becomes ever more fast-paced, more SMEs are providing their staff with mobile technology.
The poll indicated that over half of all small business managers now take this approach. Of these, 83 per cent agreed that this helped them respond to customer queries more quickly.
The evidence gathered also indicated that business start-ups and other small firms could be missing out on £60,000 per year by not being able to make use of "deadtime" - such as the time spent waiting for meetings to begin or traveling between locations during the working day.
Some 50 per cent of respondents also said that mobile technology helped them process orders more quickly.
