New research has shown that business start-ups and other UK SMEs could reduce their CO2 emissions by 2.5 million tonnes every year - and save £300 million in the process.
The study, by the Carbon Trust, highlighted the potential of advanced metering by UK SMEs to radically reduce the levels of carbon released into the environment.
The Carbon Trust installed advanced meters at over 580 UK sites. Advanced metering on average SMEs identified potential carbon savings of over 12 per cent and successfully achieved savings of over five per cent.
As reported by Manufacturing Talk, the trial also demonstrated the significant financial benefits advanced metering could bring to SMEs. On average, the companies involved saved over £1,000 a year on their energy bills.
If the adoption of advanced metering was to become widespread amongst SMEs, it is estimated that the total cost savings for small UK enterprises such as business start-ups could be around £300 million.
Tom Delay, chief executive of the Carbon Trust, said: "Our trial has shown that advanced meters can help businesses save money and also deliver significant carbon savings for the UK.
To harness this potential there needs to be a structured and sustainable roll out of this important technology to help the UK meet its commitment to cut carbon emissions by 60 per cent by 2050."
John Holbrow, chairman of the Environmental and Rural Affairs Policy Unit at the Federation of Small Businesses, commented: "We hope to see further action taken to help our members access these benefits cost-effectively and we encourage the government and energy suppliers to take the necessary steps to make this possible."
