Common domain name extensions are more popular with company directors for their businesses because potential customers are more likely to "stumble across" their websites.
According to Pipex Hosting, a leading communications supplier, when people are looking for a company they will type in the company name and .com or the company name and .co.uk first.
These domains will get a slightly higher rating on search engines and domain names that have been registered for longer amounts of time than others will be pushed up the list of search results.
There are three sets of top-level domains, country-based ones such as .co.uk, which is for commercial enterprises, org.uk, for non-commercial organisations and .ac.uk for schools.
Then there are the generic top-level domains which are separated out into things like .com, .org and .net and finally, infrastructure top-level domains, which only use .arpa and are not widely used.
Macsen Galvin, development director for Pipex Hosting, said: "Its often a lot easier for people to find you if you are on an obvious extension.
"Also there are certain domains that search engines will put a higher weighting on, so a .co.uk or .com will get you a slightly higher rating than .me.uk."
Mr Galvin added that the big advantages mainly come from the ease of finding a companys website from guesswork.
