Company directors of small businesses can improve their environmental performance and save money through a variety of low-cost and simple measures, according to Smart Works.
Measures such as switching to energy efficient light bulbs, educating staff and turning electronic equipment off at night can help companies reduce their carbon footprint, while also boosting their image.
Smart Works says that a company employing around 65 members of staff can save up to £1,500 on their annual energy bill through easy measures such as engaging employees and putting their communal equipment on timers so they are off after hours.
According to Envirowise, company directors of businesses are increasingly placing an emphasis on good environmental practice.
Research shows that in 1994, only 20 per cent of businesses in the UK accepted a link between environmental performance and profitability. Today, 50 per cent of companies see the environment as a critical issue in company formation.
However, some SMEs do not enforce environmentally-friendly practices because they have they wrong impression that it is expensive.
Sarah Van Erp, business advisor at Smart Works, said: "They often think they have not got the financial resources to take action but more than often they will save money.
"Our primary role is to go in to small businesses and outline the low-cost measures they can take that will help the environment."
