IT and software consultancy based businesses are more aware of security back-up procedures and have a lower disaster risk, according to R3.
R3, which is the brand name of the Association of Business Recovery Professionals, states that it is difficult to remain safe in some businesses, where there is a greater physical paper flow.
Manufacturing based businesses usually fare worse that IT based companies, who by their very nature, tend to have much more knowledge of back-up procedures.
According to Disaster recovery Solutions, 90 per cent of businesses that lose data in a disaster are forced to close within two years and less that half of all company directors of UK businesses have any form of business continuity plan in place.
One in 500 data centres in the UK have some sort of major disaster every year and 43 per cent of companies who do experience a disaster, never recover fully.
Nick OReilly, vice president of R3, said: "The trouble with a lot of firms, including lawyers and accountancy firms, is that although they all aspire to be electronic, there is still a lot of paper flow in most offices.
"As long as youre backing things up, maintaining a paperless office is absolutely a good thing."
