Small Businesses throughout the UK vary widely in terms of success, attitude and type, according to research from a major new study.
The project which spanned a decade, was commissioned by BT Business and reveals that while industries such as motor sales, manufacturing, retail, agriculture and mining have declined, education services sectors continue to flourish.
Company formation within the construction industry continues to grow and the hotel, catering, post and telecommunications industries also continue to flourish.
Telecommunications companies, driven by a rise in call-centre and online enterprises, have enjoyed the biggest industry growth nationwide since 1997, although the degree of expansion varies per region.
The findings also revealed a variety in the ways in which company directors of SMEs viewed themselves and their businesses.
Overall six per cent of small business founders considered themselves unique, a figure which rose to 21 per cent when Welsh entrepreneurs were questioned.
Bill Murphy, managing director of BT Business, said: "It is particularly exciting how the advancements of technology have resulted in the development of new businesses such as telecommunication industries - plus the fact that small businesses are not afraid to start up in areas of previous business stagnation."
