Company directors of small and medium-sized business are more aware of the risks of not having insurance after the recent spate of natural disasters, according to the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB).
Widespread floods, foot and mouth and the outbreak of blue tongue which affected the UK this summer, have made small businesses acutely aware of the need to have risk management structures in place.
The FSB stated however, that increased awareness does not get away from the "bare fact" that businesses may not have the money, time and resources to cope with such crises.
A survey of 250 company directors by Populus, revealed that nearly three quarters of businesses had no plans for dealing with the effects of terrorist acts.
Nearly half of businesses had no plans to deal with the impact of flooding, a third of businesses had no plans to deal with the impact of a storm and nearly a third had only "rough plans".
Simon Briault, spokesperson for the FSB said: "Theres more awareness now than ever before about the need to make sure that youve got continuity plans and that you can survive if theres a flood or a fire."
