The motives behind Small Business Week, which ended last Friday, are principally because small businesses and company directors of SMEs "do not get enough attention," according to the British Chamber of Commerce (BCC).
One of the reasons smaller business can be ignored is that business focus is often "all about growth of businesses in terms of employee figures and profits".
Many smaller businesses are very satisfied with their setup and with the money they are making - they dont necessarily want to add extra staff, which can bring extra regulation and extra difficulty - and are thus often ignored.
Company directors and small business groups have recently hit out against Gordon Browns new Business Council, which they say focuses on the interests of big business, while ignoring the concerns of SMEs, which constitute 47.1 per cent of UK employment, according to BTs State of the Small Business Nation report.
The report, which is based on independent research of 1650 business start-ups, home-based and growing businesses across the UK, also found that SMEs have a turnover of £967.2 billion and provide 10.55 million jobs across the UK.
A spokesperson for the BCC said: "Now [SMEs are] getting recognition through the week. [Its looking] at trying to overcome the barriers to growth [through] general round tables, webinars, blogs - essentially trying to help the very first steps of getting into business."
