Small and medium-sized enterprises are facing an uphill struggle when it comes to connecting with the graduate community, the Graduate Recruitment Bureau (GRB) said yesterday.
Graduates are aware of the benefits of working for SMEs but do not know how to go about contacting them, while SMEs were in danger of being "drowned out" by larger companies.
The fact that company directors of SMEs do not have the large budgets available to large corporations means that they cannot afford to advertise within national newspapers or on the internet.
This means that they do not have a channel with which to communicate with graduates, the GRB stressed.
SMEs are not able to "rely on their brand name" and are often forced to look to graduate recruitment agencies to help find suitable candidates.
In 2005, a study carried out by the Higher Education Statistics Authority found that graduate unemployment was higher than the national rate. It also found that it takes some students more than a year to find a job.
Chris Cater, director of the GRB, said: "[Graduates] are aware of the opportunities out there; their problem is how to access those companies. A graduate leaving university has heard of BP, Barclays etc
but they havent heard of SMEs. They are not brand names used around the university campus."
