Small and medium-sized enterprises should assess the level of waste they produce on a day to day basis and see if it is necessary, according to Envirowise.
The waste expert company advises that company directors of SMEs should be aware that they are now obliged to treat their waste before it is sent to a landfill site, since the implementation of the EU Landfill Directive.
The EU Landfill Directive, which came into effect on Tuesday October 30th, means that all businesses are now required to take responsibility for their waste.
According to Envirowise, company directors of SMEs will see a positive impact on their bottom line if they look at how they can become more resource efficient and so reduce their waste overall, rather than "blindly employing the services of an external waste contractor or just relying on recycling".
Heather Cholerton, waste management expert at Envirowise said: "We are suggesting that people have a look at their waste; what they are producing as waste, what resources they are using and look at if they actually do have to produce all that waste in the first place, because if you dont produce it, you dont have to treat it."
