Company directors of SMEs are increasingly recognising the benefits of contracting work out to freelancers, according to new research.
Outsourcing has becomes more a feature of the modern business world and freelance workers offer several benefits to SMEs, says Startup Co.
The problems associated with long term employment are no longer an issue and freelance workers providing a more measurable level of achievement.
Because employers are only paying contractors for the job to be done, costs are significantly reduced.
In most cases, business owners can also focus on a clear end-result, which means that they can measure the return on their investment much more accurately than they could if they had a full-time, permanent employee.
John De Groot, chief executive of Startup Co, said: "You have a lot of businesses, both smaller and large, that are offering employment on a contractual basis, which has created an expectation in the market place that it is a more normal way to do business.
"So employees, or ex-employees and independent consultants are more willing to take on that sort of work now, which perhaps was not the case before."
Startup Co was formed in 1982 by a group of local partners in West Sussex to give practical business advice to potential entrepreneurs and new business start-ups.
