Small Business Week is launched today in central London and is backed by the government, in a bid to win back SME support following the exclusion of small businesses in its new Business Council.
The initiative brings together commercial companies, campaigning groups and government organisations to offer help and advice to the UKs 4.5 million plus small enterprises and new business start-ups.
The five-day event, organised by BT Business, is backed by organisations including the British Chambers of Commerce, Business Link and Royal Bank of Scotland. Several other events are scheduled to take place around the UK to coincide with Small Business Week.
The inaugural scheme comes in the wake of mounting dissatisfaction among company directors of small businesses, entrepreneurs and lobby groups, who feel that they are being sidestepped in favour of bigger businesses.
Issues to be discussed over the course of the event include technology, flexible working and climate change.
Stephen Timms, minister for competitiveness, told Business Zone: "Small businesses employ over 10 million people - nearly half of the total private sector workforce - and contribute £967 billion to our economy.
"The increase in their numbers has been a big success for Britain in the last few years. We want to build on that now and help todays small businesses grow and take advantage of the new global markets."
