Small and medium-sized enterprises have a lack of understanding of health and safety regulations and many company directors see it as a potential hindrance to their business, according to new research.
The Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH) said yesterday that many small businesses fail to maintain their health and safety records.
Failure to comply with health and safety company legislation may cause difficulties if there is a breach of standards.
According to the Health and Safety Executive, statistics in the manufacturing sector suggest that the rate of fatal and amputation injury in small workplaces (less than 50 employees) is double those in large workplaces which employ 200 or more staff.
Lisa Fowlie, president of the IOSH said: "People think that you have to have a huge amount of red tape, and that if you start on [health and safety procedures] then its going to stop them operating.
"Whereas in actual fact, a lot of small businesses are very low risk and so the actual implementation is very reasonable and very easy to do. Theres a lack of understanding quite often."
This week (October 22nd 26th 2007) is the European Week for Safety and Health at Work 2007 which this year, focuses on the campaign Lighten the Load, dedicated to musculoskeletal disorders.
