Small and medium-sized businesses may be putting their communications at risk of interception by hackers because they overlook security issues for their wireless networks (Wi-Fi), according to new research.
The National Computing Centre (NCC) found that 40 per cent of compnay directors of SMEs had only partially secured their wireless networks, or not secured them at all.
Failing to fortify internet security means that a host of personal and sensitive customer information such as bank details could be liable to interception by hackers who manage to tap into a companys wireless network.
The findings from the NCC show that many organisations did have the security of their wired internet connection in place, which was mostly very secure. But it was found that quite often, wireless networks were overlooked.
According to the NCC, regardless of whether of not an individual is working for an SME, if they are using a wireless access point such as in a coffee shop, a secure network must be used.
Michael Dean, a spokesperson for the NCC said: "Most people who use wireless technologies probably use the settings that came with it when it was supplied. But those may not be appropriate to your organisation.
"There are some organisations that are dealing with particularly sensitive data, whether thats financial or whatever, which needs to be protected."
