Company directors of small and medium-sized enterprises looking to optimise the search engine exposure of their businesses should seek professional help, according to the Internet Advertising Bureau.
According to global internet information provider comScore, in August 2007 there were over 209 million unique users of search engines in Europe, with an average of 85.1 searches per searcher. This provides ample marketing opportunities for new business start-ups and companies seeking to expand.
Programmes manager at the Internet Advertising Bureau, Jack Wallington said that "there is a lot of free advice available on the internet and it is not always possible to know what is correct", so to be sure small businesses should at least contact a professional firm to discuss their options.
"It is definitely advisable to seek professional help. Even if someone knows a lot about search engine marketing, it is unlikely they will know everything.
"The danger with optimisation as with many areas of online is that there is a lot of free advice available on the internet and it is not always possible to know what is correct and what isnt," Mr Wallingon added.
