The British Chambers of Commerce (BCC) has welcomed a new government occupational health initiative aimed at business start-up companies and other SMEs.
However, the BCC has also emphasised that the scheme must provide for those small firms who need it most.
The government recently announced that £10 million would be used to build up to six NHS Plus demonstration sites across England.
It is hoped these will drive best practice in the way occupational health services are delivered to firms that have recently undergone company formation.
They should also help employees return to their jobs after absences caused by illness or disability.
Ivan Lewis, health minister, said: "This £10 million to support new pilot sites will reap huge rewards for employees, the NHS and society in general by having a healthier and more productive workforce."
Kieran OKeeffe, policy adviser at the BCC, told Personnel Today: "In principle we back the scheme, but the delivery part is critical.
"Its all very well announcing the funding, but it has got to be flexible so it meets the individual needs of employers."
He added: "The government needs to make sure the benefits of the scheme reach the people who really need it. The department [of health] should engage with the BCC, local chambers of commerce, primary care trusts and local employers to understand what businesses need."
