Green initiatives can provide business start-up companies with excellent business opportunities, according to one expert.
Simon Druly, business partnerships director of government-funded programme Envirowise, recently explained that environmentally-friendly practices are a form of asset protection as well as being ethically sound.
This is because an SME can increase productivity and improve profit margins by managing resources more efficiently and reducing their use of materials.
He emphasised: "Its very important for small businesses because sole trader businesses and small businesses, a lot of them are fighting to survive... Being as efficient as possible is one way of achieving that and increasing the overall productivity as a business as a whole and thereby improving profits."
Mr Druly also pointed out that firms should not make the recycling of good their top environmental priority.
He said: "Recycling isnt always the answer, it should be the last thing that you do, because most profits are made from reducing the actual utilisation of - and as a result the purchase of - materials that you dont actually need."
A report launched by Envirowise in May of this year revealed that of those surveyed, 53 per cent of businesses have taken action to improve their resource efficiency and reduce the environmental impact of their products and processes.
Envirowise also reported that companies implementing simple measures to improve their environmental credentials recorded collective financial savings of £1.7 billion.
