Over three-quarters of UK entrepreneurs would never return to working for somebody else, new research has revealed.
The study, by Abbey, found that 77 per cent of business start-up owners would rather go it alone, despite all the difficulties small businesses face.
However, within Britain there were striking regional variations in attitudes towards company formation.
Entrepreneurs in the East Midlands seem the most satisfied, with 91 per cent stating they would not want to return to their old jobs.
However, in Wales, 51 per cent said they would take up nine to five jobs again.
There were also marked variations between small business bosses working in different industry sectors.
The happiest entrepreneurs were found in the construction sector, with 91 per cent wanting to stay independent. Some 88 per cent of catering entrepreneurs were also found to be happy with their lot.
Ian Wilson, managing director of Abbey Business Banking, said: "Running your own business can be tough but rewarding.
"Our research proves that the majority of entrepreneurs would not want to return to a nine to five role working for somebody else.
"The benefits of running your own business obviously outweigh the negatives. Once people have taken the plunge they are unlikely to want to return to their old lifestyle no matter what problems they may encounter."
