With the expansion of internet protocol (IP) communications, business contact is no longer made "just by phone", experts have emphasised.
Eli Katz, chairman of the Internet Telephony Services Providers Association (ITSPA) explained that with innovations such as VoIP, instant messaging and video, "a phone call just becomes one mode of communication".
He continued: "Youve got a lot of enterprise happening in the larger enterprise; a fair amount of activity happening in the medium sizes: around about 50 to 100 employees
We expect to see an enormous amount occur at the SME side as well.
"But that will take time as these features start becoming more adopted."
According to Ofcoms annual Communications Market Report 2007, consumers are increasingly using telephone services over the internet offered by VoIP providers.
At the end of 2006, 20 per cent of respondents to Ofcoms survey said they were phoning using web services, up from 14 per cent at the end of 2005.
Ofcom also report that wireless networks are allowing more people to access the internet on-the-move.
Around 7.8 million mobile phones now connect to a 3G network (70 per cent up on 2005).
The report also shows the number of Wi-Fi hotspots in the UK, which enable broadband-speed wireless internet access, is also increasing.
