The number of small firms implementing practical environmental measures has almost doubled since 2005, new research has found.
The study, by environmental guidance provider NetRegs, found that 40 per cent of SMEs now operate an environmental policy.
This is compared to 26 per cent two years ago.
Tricia Henton, director of environment protection at the Environment Agency, told startups.co.uk: "There is a growing will among small and medium-sized businesses to protect the environment through improved business practices.
"But with limited time at their disposal, many small businesses still dont understand their basic environmental obligations."
According to NetRegs figures, company legislation has led SMEs in the UK to being fined around £2.4 million in the last year, for actions leading to pollution and environmental damage.
Charlotte High is programme manager for Smartworks, the business start-up support project of Global Action Plan.
She recently explained that "going green" could actually be "highly cost effective" for SMEs - and could be achieved through low-cost and even no-cost measures.
Ms High emphasised: "Businesses weve worked with have made significant savings through looking at their operations and identifying energy and waste efficiencies."
